Job Purpose

We are currently looking to recruit a MS SQL Server \ Python developer with at least 5 years expertise within the reserving team of the actuarial function. The role will combine both SQL Server & Python development work with on-going database administration.

The actuarial function is responsible for the delivery of actuarial services across the international segment of Tokio Marine Houston Casualty Company and have recently built a development on-premise SQL Server in order to centralise routine actuarial calculations, input / output data storage and assumption storage.

Key Responsibilities

Reserving

• Develop a working knowledge of key Actuarial principles, with an ongoing commitment to developing reserving-specific domain knowledge in order to assist with strategic process planning as new reserving transformation projects commence.
• Provide Python and SQL Server infrastructure support to the reserving team during intra- quarter periods, as well as peak reserving cycles.
• Respond to team reporting requests via the creation of custom reporting scripts & stored procedures from within SQL Server Management Studio \ PyCharm \ VSCode.
• Improvement of the current data ingestion processes currently using Python.
• Introduction of effective environmental controls within the team, so that a clear separation of concerns exists between DEV / PROD servers.
• Introduction of appropriate version control within the team scripts using Azure Devops / Github.
• Improvement \ rebuild of the existing DEV server by redesign using modern database design principles.
• Extension of the existing codebase via the automation of routine actuarial calculations within python and /or SQL Server.
   

General

• Compliance and documentation. Assist with ensuring work is compliant with both internal and external governance. Ensure documentation is current and that latest regulation is promptly incorporated.
• Development and production of management information and metrics to enhance ongoing communication with the business.
• Attendance and participation in training and events to increase the intellectual capital of the actuarial team.
   

Skills And Experience Specification

Education & experience

• Advanced TSQL querying knowledge is required, as is a strong knowledge of database design principles, indexing and other performance-related subject domain knowledge including reading execution plans.
• The ability to demonstrate the management of small-scale on-premise SQL Server databases via a working knowledge of database administration concepts.
• Advanced Python programming knowledge within the context of data science.
• The ability to demonstrate the use of Python in the context of SQL Server, including pyodbc / sqlalchemy as well as use cases involving MS Excel.
• Power BI reporting skills are highly desirable but not critical.
• Actuarial business knowledge is highly desirable but not critical.
